Intense pulsed light therapy, also known as IPL, is a type of light therapy that has traditionally been used to improve the appearance of the skin by using a high-intensity pulsed light. A newer and exciting application of IPL is being used to treat ocular surface disease (OSD). Ocular surface disease is a condition that affects the eye’s ability to produce tears.
OSD can lead to dry eye symptoms such as irritation, redness, and blurry vision. IPL has been shown to be an effective treatment for ocular surface disease by increasing tear production and improving symptoms.
There are many benefits of IPL for OSD. IPL can help to reduce the symptoms of ocular surface disease, including dryness, redness, pain, and blurred vision.
IPL can also help to prevent further damage to the cornea and conjunctiva. Additionally, IPL for the ocular surface can help to improve the overall health of the eye by stimulating blood flow and increasing oxygenation.
More InformationThere are a variety of ocular surface diseases that can be improved with intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy. Some of these diseases include dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, Sjögren’s syndrome, vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), and atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC).
We use IPL therapy to improve the symptoms of these diseases, as well as the appearance of the affected area. IPL therapy is typically performed on an outpatient basis and does not require anesthesia.
We recommend IPL for our patients when other lifestyle remedies–artificial tears, nutraceuticals, or lid hygiene–have not worked or have stopped helping.

If you have any of these symptoms, IPL with aesthetics treatments may be able to help. The treatment can help improve the quality of your tears and make them more evenly spread across the surface of your eye. This can help reduce irritation and improve overall comfort.
There are situations in which IPL may not be suitable for you. Dr. McLaughlin will go over these with you at your initial evaluation.
IPL is commonly used to treat hyperpigmentation, age spots, sun spots, rosacea, or skin lesions. It can also be used to treat wrinkles, acne, and other skin conditions.
